“Taiwan Under Threat”

For VICE on SHOWTIME, I traveled to Taiwan to find out how residents on the island are preparing and thinking about growing threats of an invasion by China.

“Xi Jinping: China’s Leader for Life”

VICE News Tonight explains how Xi Jinping secured a historic third term as head of the Chinese Communist Party. Amid worsening relations with democracies, he has committed more than ever to cracking down on anyone who challenges his reign.

“Banning Bitcoin”

For VICE News / Motherboard, we checked out the places Bitcoin miners fled to following China's clampdown on crypto — from America to Kazakhstan. The mass migration of hardware was a sight to behold, and brought to sharp focus the mining risks in democracies versus authoritarian states.

“Berlin Protests”

Even Berlin, one of the most progressive European capitals, struggles with affordable housing. Rents have doubled in the past decade, and gentrification has forced more residents to move to the city’s outskirts. Activists are now fighting back with a bold plan to nationalize some real estate. For VICE News Tonight.

“QAnon in Germany”

For VICE News Tonight, our report on how QAnon has gone global. In Germany, vegan chef Attila Hildmann has pivoted to conspiracy theories, fueling the QAnon boom and building a following that includes elements of the extreme right and anti-mask COVID-19 skeptics.

“The Impossible Choice”

With Fault Lines, I explored the lives of working Americans who’ve had to struggle without paid time off. The United States is one of the only developed economies in the world that does not guarantee sick leave. We traveled across the country to examine this social crisis.

“Black Jails”

Watch my award-winning investigation on Beijing’s extra-legal detention centers, otherwise known as “black jails.” Human Rights Watch cited my work in its own report on the matter, and editors lauded it as a textbook example of classic doorstop journalism.

“An Illegal Pregnancy, A Legal Abortion”

This undercover investigation earned a citation from The Overseas Press Club for best international reporting in any medium dealing with human rights. It examined the lengths some Chinese officials would go to enforce China’s family planning policies — in this case, forcing a woman in her third trimester to abort her child.

“China in the Bahamas”

Well before Beijing coined it the Belt and Road Initiative, I was reporting on the country’s impact beyond its borders. Our trip to the Caribbean was hardly a holiday as we doorstopped the prime minister to demand answers as to why the government there had bet on a Chinese partnership that imperiled the small island economy.

“Revisiting Black Jails”

In my final month in China before my expulsion, I revisited Beijing’s “black jails.” The Chinese premier had claimed they no longer existed. Our team set out to prove him wrong, and found that the practice remained largely unresolved.

“At Bundy Ranch”

In one of the most significant national flashpoints with militias this past decade, armed men from across the country — some of them from white nationalist groups — converged on Bundy Ranch in a stand-off with the federal government. I spent time at their camp, speaking to Cliven Bundy and his supporters.

“The United States Refugee Resettlement Program”

Before the Trump administration, the United States welcomed half of the world’s resettled refugees. Well before it became a point of political contention, my interest in the State Department program and how it works led me to produce this report, which took us to Albuquerque, New Mexico.

“Land Grab”

A village protest. Greedy land developers. Corrupt local officials. This story plays out across China all the time, but is not easily documented by journalists in real time. Our team headed to Zhejiang Province where we also visited the hospital where one of the villagers was taken to for treatment after being beaten by government-backed thugs.

“The Parents”

China saw its most devastating earthquake in a generation in 2008 — a magnitude 8.0 that killed more than 70,000 people. Many of the dead were children. I arrived at the epicenter 12 hours after the quake and filed stories every day for weeks. Of all my reports, this is the one I will forever remember.

“Nevada’s Water War”

Water is a precious resource, especially out West. I took a journey across the state to follow a thirty-year battle between Las Vegas and the state’s northern ranchers over water rights in a classic tale of David against Goliath.

“Canada’s Missing Women”

As part of a reporting trip taking a closer, unvarnished look at Canada, we reported on the widespread murders and disappearances of Indigenous women, the most vulnerable segment of the country’s population, and examined why the government has failed to take enough action to prevent this decades-long tragedy.

“Earthquake on the Tibetan Plateau”

Disaster strikes on the Tibetan Plateau in Yushu, a city with an elevation higher than Lhasa’s. From this remote region, I reported on the crumbling of a major monastery and the deaths of more than 2,500 as a result of the magnitude 6.9 earthquake.
